The Problem

The current branding of the Walters Art Museum can be categorized as dated and misaligned from the type of exhibitions and events held for the community. Their ongoing outreach initiatives demonstrates their need to connect with the younger members of their target audience in order to foster an open, continuously growing environment for learning.

I started with core foundational principle of the museum: forging a new learning path forward.

One of the definitions of forge is to form (metal, for example) by heating in a forge and beating or hammering into shape. Thus, the flame was born.

I worked to finalize the wordmark into a complete logo with an accompanying color palette that matched the new warmth found in the identity.

The new logo combined the modern simplicity and timeless influence found in the museums long standing presence within the Baltimore, Maryland community area.

The Application

With the new branding established, it was time for me to explore different applications for the museum’s identity.
